Echoing the feel-good elements of Slumdog Millionaire, this joint Brazilian/British production seamlessly directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) and written by Richard Curtis centres on three young ragamuffins who stumble across a cash-stuffed wallet on the rubbish tip where they forage to support their families. The boys (played by uniformly charismatic newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) promptly spend the loot. But then they discover that the wallet holds considerably greater value to a corrupt politician, who naturally wants it back – badly.

Helping the youngsters as part of their own quest for political justice are Martin Sheen as an American priest and Rooney Mara as his assistant, a stroke of casting that certainly adds to Trash’s global appeal, as does a cameo by CNN’s renowned international correspondent Christiane Amanpour.
