Esteemed screenwriter Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later…, Sunshine) makes his directorial debut with this intense psychological sci-fi thriller. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a young coder at the world’s largest Internet company, wins a competition to spend a week with the reclusive CEO (Oscar Isaac). He thinks he’s in for some good times and high living, but instead soon finds himself involved in an experiment with the world’s first artificial intelligence, which is housed in the body of a robot called Ava (Alice Vikander).

Unsurprisingly, the combination of a beautiful, highly intelligent female android and a powerful, possibly megalomaniacal billionaire does not lead to happy families. Like much of Garland’s other work, Ex Machina takes a hard, fascinating and sometimes disturbing look not just at the dangers of advanced technology, but also at the darker parts of the human psyche.
