Based on the hit novel by Ron Rash, illustrious Danish director Susanne Bier‘s latest English language film is set in depression era North Carolina, where newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton (Bradley Cooperand Jennifer Lawrence, together again post-American Hustle‘s success) tenaciously build up a timber empire, Serena proving equal to her husband in her ruthlessness.

But it all unravels when Serena learns that she can’t bear George any children and then discovers that he sired an illegitimate son before they were married.

As the horrific consequences of Serena’s subsequent descent into madness play out, Bier’s taut drama is a world away from the sunny romance of her last outing, Love Is All You Need, and the two charismatic leads are amply supported by Rhys Ifans, Toby Jones and Romanian actress, Ana Ularu.
