When the body of a young girl is discovered by the roadside in rural Queensland, an inner-city detective is called to the Outback to solve the mystery.

It soon becomes clear that murky undercurrents of police corruption and racism play a role in the case. Drawing on the iconography of classic westerns, Sen’s film subtly explores tensions between Aboriginal communities and the white middle classes, while its edgy whodunit narrative moves inexorably towards a violent showdown.

Mystery Road is a vital, visually beautiful piece of genre filmmaking that recalls recent Australian hits such as 2010’s Animal Kingdom and 2006’s Jindabyne in scale and theme.
