In a distinct about-turn from her usual roles, Jennifer Aniston here plays the caustic Claire, a woman who is angry, badly scarred and in constant pain after a car crash.

Her support group is rapidly growing intolerant of Claire and her rants, but she becomes darkly fascinated by the recent suicide of fellow group member Nina (Anna Kendrick, Up In The Air).

When she then embarks on an affair with Nina’s grieving widower (Worthington, Avatar), Claire finally has to face her demons. A standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival prompted by Aniston’s mesmerising, Golden Globe-nominated performance are reasons alone to catch Cake, but both Worthington and Mexican star Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros) as Claire’s long-suffering but sympathetic housekeeper are also well worth watching.
