But Chris has another life back in Texas with Taya (Miller), the new wife he met just before a tour of duty. The brutalisation of war puts a strain on this relationship, which Eastwood and scriptwriter Jason Hall weave into a powerful sub-plot that rivals the battleground scenes in intensity.
