Spymonkey’s Fleapit screened as pre-movie short
With hilarious farce Every Last Trick about to open on stage at Royal & Derngate, there is a great chance to see two of the play’s cast members in a short film here at the Errol Flynn Filmhouse over the coming weeks.
Spymonkey’s Toby Park and Aitor Basauri are familiar faces to Royal audiences, from past productions Cooped, Oedipussy and Moby Dick and along with fellow members of Spymonkey they appear in a series of short films, called Fleapit, which the company has recently released as bite-size tasters of the TV sitcom they are developing.
Written by Emma Edwards and Abigail Dooley and directed by Chris Curtis, Fleapit is set in La Scala, a failing arthouse cinema managed by pretentious film buff Kenneth Forbes (Toby Park), aided by Lorenzo (Aitor Basauri) who runs an unusual kiosk, and Otto (Stephan Kreiss), the naked machete-wielding projectionist. The cinema has recently been bought out by the cinema chain, Cinegiant, who have sent Deborah Reynolds (Petra Massey), their Interim Transitional Co-ordinator, to implement changes.
The four members of theatre company Spymonkey also play all the characters in the films seen on screen at La Scala and in the movies that are seen playing in the heads of the cinema staff.
As part of our commitment to supporting film-makers, there will be opportunities to see the first mini-episode of Fleapit screened before a number of films at the cinema during April, including 20 Feet From Stardom and Under Her Skin on Friday 18 April at 6.15pm and 8.45pm respectively, The Past on Wednesday 23 April 8.45pm, Yves Saint Laurent on Saturday 26 April at 6pm and Film Northants: Sounds Of Northampton on Tuesday 29 April at 8.45pm.
