At Sunday’s prestigious Tony Awards ceremony in New York, feelgood musical Kinky Boots scooped six awards, including best musical, best score and best leading man.

Created by pop star Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, the stage show is based on the 2005 comedy film by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, inspired by the real life story of a traditional Northampton shoemaker, who turns to making fetishist footwear for drag artists, to save the family business. A number of Northampton locations were used in the making of the film, including R E Tricker Ltd’s shoe factory in St Michael’s Road.

In celebration of the success of the new musical and its roots in Northampton, Errol Flynn Filmhouse will be screening the original cult film Kinky Boots on Friday 5 July.
