One of the few musicals to win the Best Picture Oscar West side Story remains a thrilling experience, especially when viewed on the big screen and with a newly restored soundtrack. This is an unmissable cinema experience. It’s Romeo and Juliet retold and a modern musical classic, with some electrifying, athletic dance sequences and a marvellous Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim score including The Jet Song, Maria, I Feel Pretty, Cool or America.
Natalie Wood stars in the heartbreaking role of Maria in this magnificent film of star-crossed lovers, Latin-American tensions and steamy city life. Young Puerto Rican seamstress Maria stumbles into the arms of all-American Tony at a dance; his gang and her family don’t like it, but the pair are in love and make a secret commitment to run away from the trouble and the fighting and be together, somewhere, somehow. Before their dream of escape can be realised, however, a rumble takes place and Tony stabs Maria’s brother, and tragedy ensues.
