This wincingly accurate, archly hilarious observation of smug, middle-class American mores remains a delight to behold almost 50 years after its release, as callow college graduate Dustin Hoffman is seduced by Mrs Robinson (Bancroft), the neglected wife of his dad’s business partner. Bancroft’s career-defining role as a sexual predator with a deeper emotional agenda is perfectly matched by Katharine Ross’s fresh-faced turn as her daughter, who ultimately takes Benjamin’s fancy at her mother’s bitter expense.

Following on from his 1966 directorial debut Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, and scripted by comic genius Buck Henry, The Graduate quickly confirmed Mike Nichols’s talent for socially astute storytelling, which often masked the darker side of human nature with brittle humour. All are in abundance here, performed by some of his generation’s finest actors.
