A swashbuckling opening!

Members of Royal & Derngate’s Youth Theatre took centre stage at a swashbuckling opening ceremony for the new Errol Flynn Filmhouse, on Thursday 20 June (very fittingly the birthday of the Hollywood star after whom the cinema is named).

At a pre-film reception, Take Your Seat sponsors and other supporters of the project Carlsberg, West Northamptonshire Development Corporation, and Northampton Borough Council, were treated to a display of sword-fighting in the theatre foyer, recreating a scene from one of Errol’s own films, before Royal & Derngate Chief Executive Martin Sutherland welcomed them to a preview of the cinema, the day before it opened officially to the public. Guests were then led into the 90 seat cinema by a troop of mini-Errol Flynns from the Youth Theatre, all sporting slicked-back hair and archetypal moustaches, who introduced the night’s special screening, the new Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra.

Named after the Hollywood legend who started his stage career with the Northampton Repertory Company, at the Royal Theatre, the new cinema will broaden the range of films available in the town centre, showing not just the best of the mainstream, but also a great selection of world, British and independent movies including art house, foreign language and documentary films. Built adjacent to Royal & Derngate, the new cinema is managed by the theatre in partnership with Cityscreen, the leading independent cinema operator in the UK.

The new cinema offers a grown up movie-going experience. Audiences can enjoy state of the art sound and digital film projection from the comfort of luxurious leather seating. Celebrating the best in local produce, the Errol Flynn Filmhouse is working with a number of local suppliers to provide carefully chosen range of drinks and snacks, which are available from the cinema’s bar, from around 30 minutes before the film starts. Locally produced offerings include Layla Beaumont Cakes, Gallones Ice-cream, Warner Edwards’ Harrington Dry Gin and Earls Barton English sparkling wine.

Delighted to see a further substantial addition to Northampton’s art and cultural scene and even more pleased to documentary films being included in the programme.
